Encinitas Coastal Bluff Landslide Highlights Erosion Issue

Encinitas, CA

A real estate developer based in Encinitas, California, Matthew Gordon emphasizes a proactive approach to projects and excels at identifying development opportunities across San Diego County. Actively involved in the Encinitas community, Matthew Gordon formerly served on the board of the Seacoast Preservation Association.

The goal of the Seacoast Preservation Association is to protect and preserve critical coastal property, which faces serious issues related to overuse and storm-caused erosion. This was underscored recently by a local beach cliff collapse.

As reported in the Los Angeles Times, the incident occurred just to the north of the wooden stairs that traverse the bluff from Neptune Avenue to Grandview Beach. The collapse involved a bluff section adjacent to the Grandview surf spot.

A geologist evaluating the scene was concerned that the slide may have destabilized adjacent areas of bluff and left them vulnerable to further erosion. With the coastal cliff at Del Mar experiencing half a foot of erosion each year, a coastal train route is also vulnerable. As much as 130 feet of erosion is possible by 2100 should the oceans continue to rise.
