San Diego's Louis Bank of Commerce

A real estate developer in California, Matthew Gordon has long been active in his local community and is a former treasurer of the Seacoast Preservation Association. In addition to his work in Encinitas, Matthew Gordon has restored a number of buildings in San Diego’s historic Gas Lamp Quarter, including the famous Louis Bank of Commerce.

One of the most well-known buildings in San Diego, the Louis Bank of Commerce was pre-constructed on the East Coast and brought by ship around Cape Horn to San Diego. The four-story building with two rising towers is an example of Baroque revival architecture.

The building was home to the Bank of Commerce from 1888 to 1893, at which point Isidor Louis started an oyster bar that was frequented by Wyatt Earp. Today, the building consists of some 22,000 square feet of office and retail space. In November 2016, it was purchased by PREF Commerce for $7.1 million.
